Gait Analysis
Orleans Shoe Co. — Fitted, Not Guessed
Gait & Footprint Analysis in New Orleans & Metairie
Free. No appointment. Takes a few minutes. We measure your arch length, take an imprint of both feet, and watch you walk. Then we pull shoes that actually fit how your foot moves.
What we don't do
No Treadmill
We don't film you running on a belt. We watch you walk across the floor, the way you actually move. Twenty-plus years of doing it every day tells us more than a slow-motion replay does.
What We're Looking At
Arch length
Not the same as foot length. Arch length is where your foot bends. Two people can wear the same size and need completely different shoes, because the shoe has to flex where the foot flexes. If it doesn't, you feel it in the arch or the ball of the foot. Most people have never had this measured.
Pronation
How your foot rolls when your weight comes down on it. Some roll in, some roll out, some stay neutral. It's easy to see if you know what you're looking at. What matters isn't the label — it's whether the shoe holds you where you need holding, and how much.
The imprint
The Harris mat imprint shows us where you actually load your foot. High arch, flat, collapsing under weight, more pressure on one side. The picture is right there in the ink.
Both feet
One is almost always bigger. We fit the bigger one. People get this wrong constantly and wonder why one shoe hurts.
How It Works
- Walk in. No appointment, no charge, no obligation to buy anything.
- We measure length, width, and arch length on both feet.
- You step on the Harris mat. That takes about ten seconds.
- We watch you walk a few steps across the floor.
- We pull shoes based on what we saw — and tell you why each one.
- You walk in them before you buy. Every time.
Who This Helps
- Runners picking a new trainer, or replacing one that stopped working
- Anyone on their feet all day — nurses, servers, teachers, line cooks
- People with heel pain or plantar fasciitis
- Anyone who's been sizing up to get width and living with a sloppy fit
- People whose knees or lower back started complaining and don't know why
If You Need More Than the Shoe Gives
Sometimes the right shoe isn't enough on its own. If the imprint shows your arch needs more support than a stock insole provides, we'll talk about custom fitted arch supports. We'll also tell you when you don't need them.
FAQ
Does it cost anything?
No. It's free, whether or not you buy shoes.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk into any of our four stores.
How long does it take?
A few minutes for the measuring and the imprint. Longer if you want to try things on, which you should.
Do I have to run on a treadmill?
No treadmill. We watch you walk.
Is this a medical diagnosis?
No. We're shoe fitters, not doctors. We can tell you a lot about how your foot works and what it needs from a shoe. If something looks like it needs a doctor, we'll say so.
Should I bring my old shoes?
Yes. The wear pattern on a pair you've been living in tells us a lot.
